Round 1 vs Whitehorse Pioneers
Round 1 and the boy’s headed out to the newly refurbished Whitehorse facility to face a team that were keen to start the season off with a win to compliment the New Facility launch.
The Basin side were keen to see if all the hard work of the last 2 years would hold us in good sted in Division 3. We welcomed new additions to the side in Scotty Heveren and Nath Dundas both from Alexandra but the side consisted of many familiar faces to the large Basin crowd that made the trip.
In Blustery conditions the bears were against the breeze in the first quarter and the both sides were keen to gain the upper hand in the early minutes. The boys had their usual head over the footy approach with Nath and Makes playing selfless roles, this enabling the back six to contain the Pioneers. In an even term the coaches were happy that the boys restricted the Pioneers and went into the break only a goal down.
The second term kicked off with Trev and the rest of the midfield lifting their workrate and this resulted in numerous opportunities up forward. Belly was starting find some room and Teaky up forward had a couple of opportunities to hit the scoreboard, which he will start to convert in weeks to come. While we gained the momentum we struggled to capitalize and as a result kicked 3 goals 8 behinds for the quarter and only took a slight lead into half time.
The coaching staff addressed a few minor issues at the break and the boys took it on board. As soon as the ball was thrown up to start the 3rd quarter it was all the Bears, the midfield started to win the centre clearances, which allowed Cults to show his class with a number of goals. Kingy, Gayf and Ox were driving the boys from defence and the increase in pressure around the ground was giving the forwards every opportunity. Against the breeze the boys work rate was exceptional and enabled us to play the majority of the quarter in our half. We went into the final change 4 goals up and having the luxury of having the breeze with us for the final 30 minutes.
The Whitehorse boys continued to battle it out, but it proved difficult with The Basin having the assistance of the breeze and also the momentum. Snagga continued working at a level many dream about and was picking up stats at will and it became too much for the Pioneers. The game was played in The Basin’s half for the majority of the quarter, Batman was dominating out of the centre and giving the Raging Bull first use. G Train got amongst it as he tends to do and Teak showed he was up to the mark with a couple of goals. We continued to Pepper the goals and finished the game full of running. Winning by 68 points.
Goals – Cults 7, Gallachio 4, Teak 2.
Best – Kingy, Gayf, Cults, Trev and Battye
What a great way to start the season with a really solid team performance, it is essential that we stay grounded, in what is going to be an extremely tight division. We need to continue to turn up each week with the right mindset. Next week we face up against Warrandyte for our first home game of the year and look to continue our winning run. We would like to thank our loyal supporters, who continue to rock up week in week out to support the boys.
