The Basin returned to the bearcave this week against Warrandyte who like us were coming off a win the week before.
The week was made even more special not only for our first home game in 3rd divvy in a number of years, but also the unfurling of the Under 17, Reserve and Senior Premiership flags from 2012. With Max Kruger & Scott Heveren out with injuries, Jordan Stack and Shane Hamilton were brought in after great performances in the ressies the week before.
The game itself was scrappy at times with both teams unable to gain any substantial lead and ascendancy in the first half and we took a 16 point lead into half time. Our backline looked composed and when we played our brand of football all our forwards looked dangerous.
Despite the wind favouring Warrandyte in the 3rd quarter, only our continual mistakes let them back in the game, overusing handball, poor decisions and not taking the obvious first option all counted against us in the 3rd quarter, but despite this a few late goals let us take a slender 3 point lead into the last quarter.
The instructions from the coaches were simple, stick with our brand of football, create space, work for each other and the result will take of itself – and that’s exactly how it panned out !
Treve Mills, Craig Christie and Josh Wilson got on top in the middle and along with Clinton King helped give the forwards great delivery which saw us kick 8 goals in the last quarter to finish with a 35 point victory.
Best were: Treve Mills, Craig Christie, Michael Thompson across half forward is showing he belongs at this level and Will Gayfer down back continued his great start to the year with a number of big marks.
Special mention to Josh Wilson who rucked almost unchanged for 3 quarters when Andrew Battye was concussed and did an amazing job of wearing out both Warrandyte ruckmen to be amongst our better players.
Andrew Cultrera with 6 goals and Brent Gallicio & Andy Cowlishaw with 3 each did a great job throughout the day.
At 2-0 we are exactly where we wanted to be at this stage but know we have enormous upside still to come as a team and look forward to continual improvement in our group across the board.
