A newly renovated Mount Morton road Saints facility was eagerly awaiting our arrival. With South Belgrave a finalist from 2014, they had much to prove after losing to Silvan in round 1 & for us, it was a chance for some early consolidation. Cultrera & Cardamone were the only omissions due to unavailability with the manic Kruger & livewire Kean back into the fold. Our rotations were immediately hamstrung with new recruit Adam Read done for the day however it provided another opportunity to explore our multifaceted players. A 5 goal to 3 1st quarter on the back of 15 inside 50’s was a sound start, all individual goalkickers with Kean making an early impression. Morris opened up his account with 8 disposals, Adams, D Price & Thompson with 6 apiece. The 2nd quarter saw a wasteful South notch 1.5 to our 4.4 & us a handy 28 point lead. We were racking up the inside 50’s, 30 to this point, as opposed to 17 at the same stage v Templestowe but required more “scoring zone” ball to remain dangerous. Findlay started to influence the game with 2 goals (3 for the half), Kean 2 at the break. M Price ran riot with 9 disposals (13 for the half & 1 goal), L Cripps with 6 (11 for the half). Adams laid 6 bone jarring tackles to stem any momentum South had. The 3rd quarter was a case of missed opportunities for both teams, 2.5 versus 2.4 meant an extension on our lead of a point. 46 inside 50’s to that point saw us eclipse our rd 1 game total already, however only 21 scoring shots were amassed. J Brown punched out 8 disposals, M Price 7, Battye 2 tackles & a goal, A Brown 3 midfield linking marks. An arm wrestle it definitely was, South were holding on, only our best would see us through in the last. A 7.6 last quarter to 4.0 was just the tonic to round out a successful day. An explosive midfield display generated 21 inside 50’s, taking us to a season high 67 & 34 scoring shots for the game. Mills & Christie racked up the possessions, Christie also laying 3 tackles. The defensive unit was dour, C Cripps, Smith & Garrity all holding firm to name a few. A more consistent effort this game saw us head to Zagame’s Saturday night with a 53 point win, making for an enjoyable evening. A big thanks again to our Cave crew for making the journey, see you at Heathmont in round 3.
