When the term ‘heart and soul of a football club’ are mentioned one name comes to mind, Luke Watson. This weekend at home against Chirnside, the veteran number 5 will run out for his 250th game for The Basin Football Club.
Luke bleeds red and green and has done so for over 25 years. Starting his journey with the bears as a 6 year old he moved his way through the old striped jumper, onto the bear design, and eventually back to the stripes. During his career Luke has done everything possible to squeeze every little bit of talent out of himself. While others were at home on the couch, Watto was in the gym. While others were out until the early mornings, Watto was completing a recovery session at the beach. It is the qualities like these that Luke built his senior career.
Although his name is often bantered around as being at the top of the leader board for the Reverse Coleman, Luke has reached heights in local footy that others can only strive for. His honours include a senior premiership, captaincy of a senior team, an induction to the 2000’s team of the decade and now 250 games for his home club.
Luke has been the ultimate local football professional and when he eventually looks back at his career he will know he left nothing on the field.
Congratulations Watto on an outstanding achievement.
