When the term ‘heart and soul of a football club’ are mentioned one name comes to mind, Luke Watson. This weekend at home against Chirnside, the veteran number 5 will run out for his 250th game for The Basin Football Club.
Luke bleeds red and green and has done so for over 25 years. Starting his journey with the bears as a 6 year old he moved his way through the old striped jumper, onto the bear design, and eventually back to the stripes. During his career Luke has done everything possible to squeeze every little bit of talent out of himself. While others were at home on the couch, Watto was in the gym. While others were out until the early mornings, Watto was completing a recovery session at the beach. It is the qualities like these that Luke built his senior career.
Although his name is often bantered around as being at the top of the leader board for the Reverse Coleman, Luke has reached heights in local footy that others can only strive for. His honours include a senior premiership, captaincy of a senior team, an induction to the 2000’s team of the decade and now 250 games for his home club.
Luke has been the ultimate local football professional and when he eventually looks back at his career he will know he left nothing on the field.
Congratulations Watto on an outstanding achievement.

We would like to announce Greg Granland as the coach of the Under 19’s in season 2017.
Greg’s coaching career began in the mid 2000’s at The Basin with the under 10’s. He then moved on to become the assistant coach of North Ringwood’s Under 13’s (Premiers), Under 14’s (Runners Up) and Under 15’s. In 2014 he continued his coaching at The Basin as head coach of the Under 15’s (Runner Up Division B). In 2015 Under 17’s (Runner Up Division B).
Greg has also gained valuable experience during his time as an assistant coach of the EFL inter league Under 14’s and Under 15’s teams. In 2016 He took on the role of assistant coach of the Under 19’s EFL inter league team where they played the Geelong Under 19’s at Symonds Stadium.
Greg will move up from the Under 17’s, where he was at the helm of an undefeated premiership season in 2016. Greg’s biggest strength is developing players individually both on and off the field. Greg will be assisted by Steve Arnol and Sean Ewart who both have a unique set of skills to add to the coaching team. As a coaching team they will be looking to set a new standard for the Under 19’s in 2017.
The club is delighted to announce that Pat Garrity will continue to be at the helm of the Reserves in 2017. Pat has played over 200 games of senior football with both The Basin and Boronia FC. Throughout his playing career he has been senior captain five times (2010 with The Basin, 2007-08 and 2013-14 with Boronia FC). Pat also won The Basin’s Senior Best and Fairest Award in 2009.
His commitment to the club is unrivaled as he continued to play on through the 2016 season whilst taking on coaching duties for the first time. Pat is an exceptional leader and has already made huge strides forward with the Reserves team on the back of a strong and team building 2016.
In 2017 Pat will be looking to develop as many players into senior footballers as possible whilst still chasing the ultimate success.
